Project: La Juanita

Location: Parana, Argentina

Year: 2025

Living on the banks of the Paraná embodies a duality of permanence and impermanence. The river evokes a sense of constancy—its ever-present flow has historically sustained life in the region. Yet, this same river also brings seasonal floods, reshaping the land and reminding those who dwell along its shores of life’s transience.

Our design seeks to capture and respond to this duality, integrating concepts that enhance the experience of dwelling by the river. It aims to create a sense of place that reflects both resilience and adaptability, emphasizing what it means to live with the river in the modern age. The goal is to craft a timeless, enduring, and responsive environment that harmonizes with the Paraná’s shifting nature.

Robust materials like raw concrete and adobe ground the architecture with permanence, while biodegradable elements such as timber screens celebrate natural decay and adaptation. Elevated foundations and reconfigurable spaces respond to seasonal floods and shifting family needs, echoing the fluidity of the nearby river. A solid architectural core provides stability, complemented by adaptable peripheral spaces that extend into the landscape. Native vegetation and green roofs offer enduring ecological resilience, while floodable gardens and wetlands evolve with the water's ebb and flow. Water acts as both anchor and guide—framing views, shaping movement, and creating a sensory experience that evolves with the environment.
